Schiffhauer's Gordone paintings
get front-page play in The Batt

A feature on Pulitzer-prize winning playwright Charles Gordone appearing in the Friday. Feb. 22 issue of The Battalion was accompanied by a full, front-page spread of paintings of Gordone by Robert Schiffhauer, assistant professor in Texas A&M University’s Department of Architecture.

Schiffhauer, who was also quoted in the story, has painted a portrait series of significant figures in black history, including several of the late Gordone, who came to teach at Texas A&M in 1987.

The playwright was brought to the predominantly white campus by then-university president Frank Vandiver in a move to advance racial diversity in the arts.

"I think we need to keep reminding people of (Gordone’s) work," said Schiffhauer. "The reason I'm doing all these portraits is so people won't be forgotten.”
