Culp is president-elect of
ASHRAE College of Fellows

Charles Culp, associate professor of architecture at Texas A&M, has been named president-elect of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers’ College of Fellows.

Culp, along with architecture professor Jeff Haberl, is an advisor of ASHRAE’s Aggie student chapter.

“My platform is to focus on increasing student involvement with ASHRAE,” said Culp about his presidential agenda. “I’m currently planning and implementing a program to fund student participation at national meetings.”

Culp said ASHRAE, which has approximately 50,000 members and 500 fellows, names 18 to 20 new fellows each year.

The group, open to any person associated with the field, aims to advance technology to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world.

In 2008, ASHRAE certified Culp as a High-Performance Building Design Professional. The certification program identifies individuals who have demonstrated the necessary training and tools for the design of high-performance buildings that live up to their performance capabilities.

Culp, also associate director of the Energy Systems Laboratory at the Texas Engineering Experiment Station, is a licensed engineer and holder of 11 U.S. patents. He has more than 25 years of academic and professional experience in engineering, research, teaching and management.

As one of the principal investigators on the ESL team, Culp assists the state of Texas with a variety of initiatives related to Senate Bill 5, a sweeping legislation that in 2001 established new energy-efficiency measures for buildings aimed at reducing energy consumption and improving air quality.

Culp’s academic interests include involving students in research combining architecture with affordable technology to achieve high performance residential and commercial buildings; measurement, verification and air flow technology and human comfort in building spaces.
