Julian Kang, associate professor of construction science at Texas A&M, will be in charge of developing short courses to help industry professionals who work with concrete better understand opportunities provided by building information modeling.
Kang's work is part of his service on the American Concrete Institute's Committee 131: Building Information Modeling, where he chairs a subcommittee for training.
"I will also be leading an effort to collect best practice cases demonstrating the use of BIM in concrete structure design and construction," said Kang. "The collected cases will be posted on the ACI website."
In addition to the short courses and best practice cases, Kang, who attended the ACI's fall 2009 convention in New Orleans, helped the committee identify the following goals:
Kang was recently quoted in Constructech magazine about various BIM software applications in an article about the construction industry's increasing use of BIM-related technologies.
“We have one dominant application for BIM right now but the application that the general contractor or designers will end up using will be determined by request of the client,” he said. " I believe this will lead to no one single dominant application in the market, meaning that general contractors and designers will have to be good at using multiple applications.”
