Environmental Design student Hannah Haese’s prowess with the written word landed her a free trip to an international lighting conference last October with other select students from the U.S. and Canada.
Haese was one of 10 students from North America whose essay about lighting design won an award from the International Association of Lighting Designers. The award included an all-expense paid trip to the organization’s 2007 conference, “IALD Enlightened,” in Montreal, Canada. The prize also afforded opportunities to interact with senior professionals and award-winning lighting designers while attending sessions on a variety of topics related to modern lighting design.
Transitioning from a student to an intern, and finally into a full-time professional, requires the contributions of many — including faculty, practitioners and the students themselves, said Derek Porter, principal designer and owner of Derek Porter Studios. "Experience, development and intellectual understanding can take years to develop,” he continued, “and it takes the dedication and investment of individual (practices) to train the next generation of lighting designers."
