Aggie Spirit Award winner excels
in studio weeks after brain surgery

Bradley Bertrand, a fourth-year architecture student, was one of two A&M students who received the Aggie Spirit award in September 2007. Bertrand enrolled in a “full load” of classes just weeks after having surgery to treat a brain tumor.

“Brad came into my design studio last spring, a few weeks after having major surgery for brain cancer,” said Susan Rodiek, assistant professor of architecture. “Although he was still recovering, he showed up for every studio session, was extremely hard-working, and produced an outstanding health care design project.  His courage and perseverance helped inspire the other students to higher levels of achievement,” she said.

The Aggie Spirit award is presented by the Texas A&M Faculty Senate and recognizes outstanding courage and determination in the face of adversity.

“He is determined to complete his education in architecture in spite of having to deal with the adversity of his illness,” said faculty senate speaker Angie Hill when she presented the award.

Bertrand, from Lake Dallas, received the award along with Alonso Fiero, a member of the armed forces enrolled in the College of Education and Human Development.
