Land development pros highlight
REDA Spring 2010 Speaker Series

 

Six of the state's top real estate professionals will discuss their professional experiences as part of the Texas A&M Real Estate Development Association's speaker series this spring.

"The series is designed to give Master of Science in Land Development students a unique window into the career achievements of leaders in the Texas real estate profession," said Geoffrey Booth, MSLD program coordinator.

Booth has asked series speakers to share their achievements, experiences and values that have shaped their careers, to note things they wouldn't change as well as things they would and why.

The lectures will be held 7-9 p.m. in the Wright Gallery on the second floor of the Langford Architecture Center building A. Featured speakers are: (Jan. 28) Dan Leverett, vice president of the commercial division of The Woodlands Development Company; (Feb. 11) Scott McGarity, managing director for asset services with Colliers International Dallas-Fort Worth; (Feb. 25) Paul Lynn, vice president of the Accelerated Marketing Division and southwest regional manager of Chartwell Group in Houston; (March 25) Peter Barnhart, vice president in the Caldwell Companies' Land Development Division; (April 8) Skip Preble, CEO and financial engineer with Land Analytics; and (April 22) Phil Rosenfeld, founder of Colliers Ownership Advisory Group.

Speaker bios:

January 28 — Dan Leverett, vice president of the commercial division of The Woodlands Development Company, kicks off the series.

Leverett has profit and loss responsibility for all commercial operations of the company in The Woodlands, Texas including asset monetization, land sales and acquisitions, leasing and property management, financial analysis, land planning and architectural design. He is also developing new urban mixed use office, retail, condominium, hotel and multi-family projects.

He previously worked with Exxon Corporation for 10 years in various positions with three subsidiaries: Exxon USA, where he managed Exxon's office and industrial portfolio in the U.S., Canada and Central America; Friendswood Development, where he marketed and developed commercial office and retail properties; and with Exxon Chemical as a financial manager.

Leverett earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1980 and a Master of Business Administration degree in finance in 1988 from Texas A&M.


Feb. 11 — Scott McGarity, managing director for asset services with Colliers International Dallas-Fort Worth will lecture. He is responsible for the leasing and management of approximately eight million square feet in Dallas/Fort Worth and oversees project leasing, property management and new business development for investment and institutional clients.

Since starting in the industry, McGarity has represented institutional and private ownerships including MetLife, UPS, GE, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Lehman Brothers in various capacities such as leasing and asset strategy.

He has managed three offices, spearheaded new business development and overseen the leasing of office/mixed-use properties in five major cities across the southern United States.


Feb. 25 — Paul Lynn, vice president of the Accelerated Marketing Division and Southwest regional manager of Chartwell Group in Houston, will speak. He is a widely quoted expert on the benefits of accelerated marketing via the real estate auction. A frequent speaker on the subject, he has addressed professional and trade organizations locally, regionally and nationally. He has authored or co-authored numerous articles that have appeared in real estate columns for various trade publications.

Throughout his real estate career Lynn has focused his expertise in real estate investment sales and leasing of all types of commercial, and special purpose properties, with an aggregate value totaling more than $1 billion.

Lynn has been involved in auctions and sealed bid sales throughout Texas, nationally and internationally. His client base includes Fortune 500 companies, corporate America, financial institutions, insurance companies, developers, REITs, homebuilders, business owners, and private sellers, as a broker and consultant.


March 25 — Peter Barnhart, vice president in the Caldwell Companies' Land Development Division, is the featured speaker. Barnhart identifies, acquires and develops land properties for future planned community development projects, and handles the negotiations related to the acquisition of each property.

He earned a Bachelor of Construction Science degree a Master of Land and Real Estate Development degree Texas A&M.

His 12 years of real estate experience include six years with RealtiCorp Commercial Investment Fund in Greenville, S.C. Beginning as director of sales and marketing and advancing to regional partner, he handled complex land development transactions in seven different cities involving more than 400 acres of land. Barnhart also has experience with Byzance, Inc. and Plantation Homes.

April 8 — Skip Preble, CEO and financial engineer of Land Analytics, takes a turn at the podium. He has been active in the real estate development industry for more than 25 years, with involvement in master planned community development as well as lot development and home building.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a Master of Land Economics degrees from Texas A&M.

Land Analytics provides financial analysis, project optimization and training services to developers, homebuilders and investors throughout the U.S. and Canada.

April 22 — Phil Rosenfeld wraps up the lecture series. He specializes in the industrial markets of north Dallas and is also involved in project leasing, sales and acquisitions, as well as real estate consulting.

In 2007, Rosenfeld established the Colliers Ownership Advisory Group, which is dedicated to clients who have an interest in owning, instead of leasing, their real estate.

His real estate career began after receiving a professional degree in law in 1994, working in Houston and Dallas as a licensed attorney. He received considerable experience handling property sales, foreclosures, condominium regulations, landlord/tenant disputes, small business acquisitions and probate work.

Through his association with American Title Company, Rosenfeld specialized in curative title work primarily handling real estate and commercial cases including foreclosures, bankruptcies, property tax sales and construction defects.

The Real Estate Development Association provides students in the MSLD program with enhanced leadership training, access to and understanding of the real estate development industry, professional
exposure and networking opportunities.
