There will be two decades of memories to share at a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Texas A&M’s Santa Chiara Study Center hosted by the College of Architecture Oct. 30 and 31.
Center founder and director Paolo Barucchieri, executive professor of architecture, and administrator Sharon Jones will be on hand for the festivities, which are scheduled at several campus and Brazos Valley locations.
A popular destination for students looking to fulfill the college’s Semester Away requirement, the center is located in the medieval hilltop town of Castiglion Fiorentino, approximately a two-hour drive north of Rome.
On Oct. 30, a reception from 3 – 4:30 p.m., hosted by Jorge Vanegas, dean of the College of Architecture, will take place at Preston Geren Auditorium in Langford B.
A celebration barbecue will begin at the Brazos Center at 7 p.m. Highlights of the event will include:
Among scheduled activities on Oct. 31 is a tailgate party hosted by the Department of Construction Science on the grassy area south of Langford A beginning at 11 a.m.
More information, and a complete list of activities, is available at http://studyabroad.tamu.edu
Barucchieri teaches a course at the center called Arts and Civilization, said Elton Abbott, the college’s assistant dean for special projects. “All the field trips are based on his class. There’s a design studio and other classes we offer, but his course is the backbone of the program and has been from the beginning.”
Approximately 1,200 College of Architecture students have spent a semester at the center, said Abbott.
“Students would say that study abroad is the highlight of their academic career,” said Abbott, characterizing students’ experiences in Italy and other study abroad venues. “They come back and they’re transformed. It really is a turning point for them.”
