Distinguished architects highlight
Dept. of Architecture lecture series

The Fall 2009 Department of Architecture Lecture Series features several prominent architects and architectural scholars. The lectures, which run Sept. 21 through Nov. 16,  are scheduled Monday nights at 5 p.m. in the Preston Geren Auditorium. For more information, contact Hala Gibson at 979.845.0129.

Sept. 21 — Roland Snooks: Snooks is co-founder and project design partner with Kokkugia, an agency for experimental architecture. Members of Kokkugia, an experimental research-based practice, split their time between teaching and developing new design methodologies. The name originates from Aristophanes’ play “The Birds,” in which the city, Nephelo-Kokkugia, is built in the clouds by birds. It’s a name that befits the trio’s belief that “architecture needs to be a little more comic, more whimsical”. Snooks is also a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania and an adjunct assistant professor at Columbia.

Sept. 28 — Caracas Urban Think Tank: Hubert Klumpner and Alfredo Brillembourg are adjunct professors of architecture who lead Caracas Urban Think Tank, a Latin American non-profit NGO research laboratory —  http://www.u-tt.com

Oct. 5 — Mark Wamble: Wamble is principal for Interloop—Architecture in Houston, a firm founded in 2001 by Wamble and fellow principal Dawn Finley. Their work is diverse — divided equally between design projects (that range in scale, type, and complexity) and production-related problem solving. Wamble, a graduate of the Texas A&M architecture program, is also a visiting instructor at the University of Michigan, Harvard University, and Columbia University.

Oct. 12 — Hugo Segawa: Segawa is an associate professor at the University of Sao Paolo’s School of Architecture and Urbanism and the author of several books and articles on Brazilian and international architecture.

Oct. 19 — Paul Preissner: Preissner is founder of Paul Preissner Architects LTD, a full service architectural office providing planning services, building design, interior design and landscape design.

Nov. 9 — Alex Pincus: Pincus is a principal at Bureau V and a partner at an art production agency in Los Angeles called XV. An architect and educator, he has taught architecture at Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, and is currently a visiting professor in the Design Energy Inititive at the University of Kentucky School of Architecture. Prior to founding Bureau V, Pincus worked at Eisenman Architects, Archi-Tectonics and most recently, Asymptote Architecture. As a senior designer for Asymptote, he led the design of the international competition winning Budapest Bank Towers in Hungary, the Strata Tower in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and the Volkswagen Knowledge Gate in Wolfsberg, Germany.

Nov. 16 — Mark Foster Gage: Gage, an assistant professor at Yale University School of Architecture, is principal at Gage-Clemenceau Architects. The firm engages the continuing role of computation in generating new formal and aesthetic genres for architecture.
