CHUD helps Laredo students learn
about careers in health sciences

Instead of lounging about on a day off from school, 63 students from four middle schools in Laredo spent Columbus Day at a health science career minicamp organized in part by Texas A&M’s Center for Housing and Urban Development.

Representatives from the center’s Colonias Program recruited students for the minicamp, said Oscar Muñoz, CHUD deputy director. “Originally, we were going to have 25 students, but we ended up with 63.”

Students learned about health science careers with hands-on activities ranging from emergency response, respiratory care, wound care and physical assessment.

The camp’s sessions were led by students at the Canseco School of Nursing at Texas A&M International University, city of Laredo Fire Department Academy firefighters and cadets, and teachers, staff and students at the Laredo ISD Cantu Health Science Magnet School.

CHUD teamed with The Texas A&M Health Science Center, Texas A&M International University, Laredo Community College, the city of Laredo and the Laredo ISD to make the camp possible.

“Plans are being developed for a spring minicamp and summer health science careers discovery camp in 2010,” said Muñoz.
