“The Cliffhanger,” a former student’s concept of a hotel that can be strapped to any dramatic, vertical site, was a finalist in a 2009 worldwide competition for innovative hospitality ideas.
Eddie Abeyta, who earned a Master of Architecture degree from Texas A&M in 1994 and a Bachelor of Environmental Design degree in 1991 and is now a senior vice president and associate principal at HKS Architects, hatched the idea that was among the top four entries in the Radical Innovation in Hospitality Awards contest.
“Cliffhanger is the ultimate hotel experience based on the concept of suspension in space,” said Abeyta in his concept statement. “The modular concept, based on a vertical, structural truss suspended with tension rods, embraces a stack of individual guestrooms, one per floor, to maximize the drama of the surrounding environment.”
The hotel, he said, could be in places such as the Golden Gate Bridge, California’s redwood forests or the Grand Canyon.
