Construction science department hosts
visiting North Texas high school students

The Texas A&M Department of Construction Science recently hosted a group of high school students from North Texas that was touring universities across the state.

Julian Kang, associate professor of construction science, said he and other speakers, including George Eustace, senior lecturer of construction science, and Joe Horlen, head of the department, told the students about career opportunities in the construction management field.

Students learned that managers don't build the structures, but manage people, resources, budgeting and scheduling, and use technology to help them perform their tasks.

"We gave them a chance to take a look at the real picture of a construction project from beginning to end, and maybe have a different concept toward the construction professions," said Kang.

The potential future students also learned about the dynamic nature of the industry.

"New theories and technologies, such as building information modeling and integrated project delivery, are always taking place in the construction industry," said Kang. "We wanted to get them interested in these new concepts."
