Competition teams from the Department of Construction Science at Texas A&M’s College of Architecture fared well at the Associated Schools of Construction’s annual competition Feb. 7-9 in Dallas.
In the design/build team, consisting of Aaron DiFilippo, Adeel Mitha, Andrew Darnell , Carlos Ramirez and John DiFilippo captured first-place honors. The team was coached by Boong Ryoo, assistant professor of construction science.
Turning in a third-place finish in the commercial building division was a team consisting of Brian Massey, Brooks Herman, Cheri Chen, Michael Knapp, Nick Pirro, Troy Louwerse and alternate Kristian Jonsson.
Sally Morgan, Debra Ellis and George Eustace, senior lecturers in the Department of Construction Science, coached the team. They were also assisted by team sponsor, Joeris General Contractors, Inc. of San Antonio.
Prior to the competition, the commercial building team had a lock-in planning session hosted by Joeris in San Antonio, where the firm is headquartered. After hearing the team’s presentation, Gary Joeris, firm president, and four members of the Joeris management team advised Aggie team members how to improve their planning process and presentation skills.
This was the second year for Joeris to help an Aggie team in ASC competition.
In the Best Presenters competition, team member Brian Massey won second place among 54 presenters in the commercial building division.
Also at the event, Nicholas Beuke, a junior construction science student who is currently interning with Bartlett-Cocke in College Station, received a $3,000 Associated General Contractors’ QUOIN scholarship. QUOIN is the name of the AGC’s Dallas/Fort Worth chapter.
