CIAC members discuss construction
science program, hear presentations

Members of the Department of Construction Science’s Construction Industry Advisory Council learned how their firms could become involved with projects afforded by the U.S. government’s stimulus package and heard student presentations during its spring 2009 board meeting March 27 at the College Station Hilton.

CIAC members advise Texas A&M construction science program administrators and faculty on contemporary construction issues and influence the department's strategic direction and course content.

In the keynote address at the CIAC meeting, John Kinney, a senior public policy adviser with Memphis-based law firm Baker Donelson, gave CIAC members the latest details on the stimulus program.

Later in the day, construction science competition team members showcased their award-winning presentations.

The design/build team of Aaron DiFilippo, Adeel Mitha, Andrew Darnell, Carlos Ramirez and John DiFilippo presented solutions for the construction of a history center in Denver; a presentation that garnered the team
first-place honors at the February 2009 Associated Schools of Construction competition in Dallas. Boong Ryoo, assistant professor of construction science, was the team’s coach.

The commercial building team, which finished third at the February contest, showcased its strategy for upgrading Fair Park in Dallas. Team members included Brian Massey, Brooks Herman, Cheri Chen, Michael
Knapp, Nick Pirro, Troy Louwerse and alternate Kristian Jonsson. Coaching the commercial building team were Sally Morgan, Debra Ellis and George Eustace, senior lecturers in the Department of Construction Science. The team also received professional advise from industry representatives from Joeris General Contractors, Inc. of San Antonio.

Also at the annual gathering, representatives from CIAC member firms attended breakout sessions to discuss department curriculum, program development, research initiatives and organization membership.
