Irish editorial cites Ulrich research
to make case for single patient rooms

An editorial in the Irish Times touting the need for more single rooms in Ireland’s hospitals cited research by Roger Ulrich, professor of architecture.

“Single rooms reduce long-term costs, as has been outlined by Prof. Roger Ulrich of Texas A&M University,” says the editorial. “He has shown also that there is no evidence that single rooms prevent visual observation of patients and therefore worsen patient safety. Nor do they require higher nurse staffing levels.”

In 2008, Ulrich and Irish movie star Gabriel Byrne made joint appearances in Ireland to raise public awareness on the benefits of evidence-based design as part of the Irish government’s multibillion-dollar effort to modernize its healthcare infrastructure.
