Design-build presentations made to industry pros in Houston from TAMU College of Architecture on Vimeo.
Students in two design-build capstone classes traveled to Houston Dec. 2 and presented plans to industry professionals for the design and construction of a proposed multidisciplinary construction science building at Texas A&M’s College Station campus.
Three groups, including undergraduate students who are preparing to enter the construction industry and graduate students in architecture and civil engineering made presentations at Satterfield and Pontikes Construction, Inc. The students were led by José Fernández-Solis, assistant professor of construction science.
Videos of the student presentations are available at http://vimeo.com.
Each student team formed a virtual design-build company for the project, and developed three portfolios for each firm: one with information about the company, another about the company's design services and another about its construction services.
Each of the company information portfolios included a formal proposal for the building with bonding information, insurance and a design-build contracts, the firm's financial data, an organizational chart, historical data of past projects to showcase performance, a risk management plan and a safety plan.
The proposals also included a lean design and construction plan, an information technology utilization strategy and a company code of ethics.
The project's design services portfolios for the virtual companies included a program analysis and interpretation, a conceptual building design, and a Leadership in Environmental Energy and Design (LEED)-platinum building strategy.
The firms' construction services portfolios contained details such as preconstruction plans, a site logistics and safety and risk management procedures, conceptual estimating with assumptions, preliminary milestone scheduling, staffing, subcontracting and historically underutilized business plans.
Representatives from S&P and FKP Architects who reviewed and critiqued the students' work included:
The jurors rated Lonestar Construction's effort as the top proposal. The virtual company consisted of Ryan Adams, Jose L. Bermudez Alcocer, Charter Charanza, Andrew Cowan, Kashif Hasan, Jay Marrou, Mazahir Plumber, Parsa Sabahi and Abhijeet Kumar Singh.
While preparing their projects during the semester students heard presentations by speakers from KDW, an architecture and engineering firm, ARCON Associates, Inc., an architecture and construction firm, SKANSKA, a project development and construction company, Satterfield and Pontikes, FKP Architects, and The Texas A&M University System.
