Renowned illustrator to lecture,
lead workshop at Texas A&M

An illustrator whose work has won numerous awards and worldwide critical praise came to Texas A&M March 25-28 to lecture and lead an illustration workshop as part of the College of Architecture's Artist in Residence program.

Anita Kunz's work appears regularly in The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, GQ and the New York Times Magazine. She is one of two artists chosen by Rolling Stone to produce a monthly illustrated history of rock and roll.

She talked about her work during a public lecture in Langford C-105 and led students in a workshop March 27-28.

"Students wanted to know how to draw, how to infuse an image with the kind of life that she does, and they leanred a lot from her," said Carol Lafayette, chair of the College of Architecture’s Artist in Residence program and associate professor of visualization.

Kunz' illustrations are in the permanent collections of the Canadian Archives in Ottawa, the Musée Militaire de France in Paris, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome; a number of her Time Magazine cover paintings are housed at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C.

Her works have been exhibited at Canada House in London's Trafalgar Square, in solo shows at the Foreign Press Office in New York City, the Creation Gallery in Tokyo, the Govinda Gallery in Washington D.C., and the Art Institute of Boston; the Society of Illustrators' Museum of American Illustration mounted a mid-career retrospective of her work in 2000.

She's the first Canadian to have a solo show at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.

She talked with Illustration Friday.com about a typical assignment for a magazine client.

"I get a manuscript and come up with an idea … or a couple of ideas. I talk it through with the art director and hopefully he or she will give me a lot of latitude and creative freedom to paint it as I see fit," she said.

Kunz told the website about her development as an artist.

"I think anybody finds their style just by working a lot," she said. "The more you draw the more likely you'll find your personal visual voice."

Kunz also frequently teaches workshops and lectures at universities and institutions internationally, including the Smithsonian Institution and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.

The Artist in Residence Program is supported by the Texas A&M University Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts, the College of Architecture, and the Department of Visualization.
