Vaibhav Malhotra, a student in the Master of Science in Construction Management program at Texas A&M’s College of Architecture, was awarded The University of Salford Pro-Vice Chancellor Prize for Best Paper in Research & Innovation at the Built and Human Environment International Postgraduate Research Conference 2009.

The Jan. 29-30 conference at The Lowry in Greater Manchester, U.K., was attended by Malhotra, Jose Fernandez-Solis, assistant professor of construction science at Texas A&M, and Rohan Jawali, who is also pursuing a Master of Science in Construction Management degree.

Malhotra’s paper, “Identification of Strategies & Challenges of Decentralized Alternative Energy Source for Reduced CO2 Emissions in the Mercantile Sector," was one of 74 papers shortlisted by the conference’s International Scientific Committee for presentation and inclusion in a conference publication.

Jawali’s paper, “Building Sustainability Rating Index for the Construction Industry,” was also selected for presentation and publication by the committee.

Fernandez-Solis served on the conference’s International Scientific Committee, consisting of 67 academics and professionals from 13 different countries. The committee reviewed submitted papers and selected the top papers for publication.

The ninth annual conference assembled postgraduate students from around the world who are researching in the field of the built environment, offering them an opportunity to enhance and develop research skills, network and exchange research ideas and activities in a supportive environment.
