For his significant impact in the construction industry and ongoing support for the Department of Construction Science at Texas A&M University, Gary Joeris, president of Joeris General Contractors, recently received the Constructor Hall of Fame Award. The honor, presented annually to a non-Aggie leader of the construction industry by the Department of Construction Science and the Construction Industry Advisory Council, was given to Joeris at the department’s April 24 awards banquet at the College Station Hilton.
CIAC members advise Texas A&M construction science program administrators and faculty on contemporary construction issues and influence the department's strategic direction and course content. Joeris, a member of CIAC for more than 10 years, has recruited numerous students from Texas A&M’s construction science program; there are 30 Aggies now working at his company.
Joeris also established two endowed scholarships in the construction science program in 2007, the Leo S. Joeris and the Joeris General Contractors scholarships. Leo Joeris founded the company in San Antonio in 1967.
Growing up watching his father operate the company, Joeris later earned a Bachelor of Building Construction Technology degree from American Technological University. He joined his father’s firm in 1978, working as a project manager and estimator.
He became vice president in 1983, when the firm changed from the partnership of Joeris & Claus to Joeris, Inc., and became the firm’s president in 1994.
Under Joeris’ leadership, the company has garnered numerous awards. The San Antonio Business Journal recognized Joeris General Contractors as one of San Antonio’s Best Places to Work in 2006 and 2007.
The journal also recognized Joeris as one of San Antonio’s fastest-growing companies in 2007, noting it had an annual growth rate in 2006 of 62.49 percent from the previous year.
