Students impress industry leaders
with lean construction presentations

Four teams of Texas A&M construction science students charged with developing a lean construction delivery schedule for a new Fort Bend County jail, presented their work to a jury of industry professionals in a competition held May 4 at the Texas A&M System offices.

The competition engaged student teams from interdisciplinary capstone and lean construction classes led by José L. Fernández-Solis, assistant professor of construction science.

In their final presentations, the teams outlined plans for the jail’s construction using advanced delivery techniques that maximize value while minimizing waste. Their lean construction proposals incorporated building information modeling and quality assurance and control measures.

The competition judges praised the winning team for its thoroughness in covering all of the 11 topics on which they were judged, as well as the quality of its data-packed BIM presentation.

Members of the winning student team were Charlie Harper, Patrick Hurst, Justin McDonald, Travis McWhirter, Lance Moore, Luke (Jeffrey) Schmidt, Mario Salinas and Nick Orsinio.

Judging the student presentations were, Joe Glowacki, vice president and general manager, and Andy Tandon, project manager, from Turner Construction; Steven Donnelly, team manager for Linbeck; and, from the Texas A&M University System, J. Brett Cumpton, architectural project manager for facilities planning and construction, Eduardo A. “Eddie” Menchaca, historically underutilized business coordinator, and Russ Wallace, director of project delivery.
