For decades, David Woodcock has been the face . . . and the voice . . . of historic preservation in the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University.
Behind Professor Woodcock’s refined British accent lay an enthusiasm and passion for preservation that touched and inspired countless generations of students. Those students, and their impact on preservation architecture throughout Texas and the nation, represent a living legacy of cultural treasures and historic spaces preserved for posterity.
Equally at home lecturing at international forums or crawling under 18th century East Texas frontier homes, Woodcock is the consummate professional. During his 38-year career, his work has gone far beyond the studio and classroom to representing Texas A&M at scholarly conferences to directing summer field studies for the Historic American Buildings Survey.
It’s little wonder that former students and other “Friends of David” have launched an effort to recognize his career by creating the David Woodcock Professorship in Historic Preservation. This endowed professorship, to be held by the Director of the Center for Heritage Conservation, will be a permanent source of support for preservation studies in the College of Architecture and a tribute to a beloved faculty member whose leadership shaped the Department of Architecture and those studies for decades.
