Former landscape architecture student
talks to the Chronicle about her work

Downtown Houston parks are being transformed by Lauren Griffith, a former Texas A&M landscape architecture student and founding principal of Lauren Griffith Associates.

An interview with Griffith, published in the Sept. 4, 2010 Houston Chronicle, focused on her firm’s “plum jobs,” including a collaboration with Hargreaves Associates in San Francisco on the critically acclaimed Discovery Green and her work on Market Square Park.

In designing Market Square Park, Griffith told Chronicle writer Kaplan, her firm strived to blend urban and neighborhood characteristics.

“Layering the historical, artistic, commemorative and neighborhood aspects into a successful public space was a challenge,” she said. “For downtown, we're hoping it will increase business for surrounding restaurants and bars and make downtown living more appealing and spur more development around the park.”

Griffith graduated Summa Cum Laude from Texas A&M in 1979, earning a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree.

Kaplan’s Q&A interview with Griffith is available online at www.chron.com.
