Design contests seeks solutions to
Langford's third-floor studio space

College of Architecture students at Texas A&M are eligible to compete for cash prizes in an interdisciplinary design contest to improve the review space in Langford A 300.

Proposals will be accepted until noon Dec. 18, with winners to be selected in three categories: innovation, best problem solving and presentation/communication. Each winning entry will receive $250. Design ideas that are selected for implementation will be recognized as part of the new construction.

"The space is poorly defined by removable partition walls and the noise can be overwhelming, particularly when multiple studios are taking place," said Ming-Han Li, associate professor of landscape architecture and competition coordinator.

Improvements, he continued, should address space definition, noise control and lighting.

"Egress and exit codes and other safety regulations for state buildings should be considered," he said. "The space should accommodate 30 to 40 students, and the proposed budget should be within $50,000."

Teams of at least two but no more than three students each may work on entries, said Li.

"Team members should include students from at least two departments or degree programs of different disciplines in the college. Teams failing to meet this requirement will be disqualified," he said.

Students are asked to submit one 24" x 36" poster in PDF format and a PowerPoint presentation, up to 8 slides, saved on a CD, to the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning office on the third floor of Langford A. The design proposal's proposed budget must also be included in the submission.

Judging the entries will be Rodney Hill, professor of architecture, Chang-Shan Huang, associate professor of landscape architecture, Julian Kang, associate professor of construction science, Forster Ndubisi, head of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning, and Julie Rogers, senior lecturer of architecture and visualization.
