Master of architecture graduate wins
prestigious delineation competition

An architectural rendering (pictured above) by Hernan Molina, a 2007 Master of Architecture graduate from Texas A&M University, won best of show in the 33rd Annual Ken Roberts Memorial Delineation Competition hosted by the Dallas chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

The award was announced at the competition’s Nov. 15, 2007 awards presentation at the Magnolia Theatre in Dallas.

Her presentation was attended by college faculty, staff and students.

Brody, colleagues earn JAPA's 2007 Best Paper
honors for research examining Florida flooding

A professor and three Ph.D. students in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning at Texas A&M University recently earned the Journal of the American Planning Association’s 2007 Best Article/Best Paper Award for an article they co-authored examining the financial impact of flooding in Florida.

Their paper, “The Rising Costs of Floods: Examining the Impact of Planning and Development Decisions on Property Damage in Florida,” was published in June 2007.

Wenger returns to NSF, leaves
indelible legacy at Texas A&M

Last August, after almost 19 years of distinguished service to Texas A&M University, Dennis E. Wenger retired from his faculty post and returned to the National Science Foundation where he serves as director of two programs within the Directorate for Engineering’s Division of Civil, Mechanical & Manufacturing Innovation (ENG/CMMI) — the Infrastructure Systems Management and Hazard Response Program and the Information Technology and Infrastructures System Program.

Previously a professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning since 1989, Wenger was the founding director of the Hazard Reduction and Recovery Center at Texas A&M’s the College of Architecture.

Retirement not slowing distinguished prof;

for Monterrey Tech's Barragán Chair

Though retired from his distinguished professor post in the Texas A&M Department of Architecture, Malcolm Quantrill isn’t slowing down.

He remains active as the director of the Center for the Advancement of Studies in Architecture (CASA), and he was recently appointed as International Representative for the Luis Barragán Chair at the Monterrey Institute of Technology in Queretaro, Mexico.

Architecture students to unveil designs
for equestrian center serving the deaf

Master plans and architectural design concepts created by Texas A&M architecture students for Isaiah’s Place, a 40-acre equestrian facility serving the hearing impaired, will be unveiled Friday, Feb. 15 at a public presentation in the Dallas office of HKS, Inc.

The presentation will be held 11:30 a.m. in the HKS offices located at 1919 McKinney Ave. in downtown Dallas.

Project teaching problem-solving
techniques to poor Hispanic families

Poor Hispanic families who have children with asthma are being taught how to cope with the illness and other challenges through a federally funded $1.8 million study being conducted by a professor at Texas A&M University.

Walking the primarily Spanish-speaking families through problem-solving exercises can help them get a grasp of their problems and move toward resolving them, says principal investigator James Varni, who has worked with children's hospitals for more than 30 years as a pediatric psychologist specializing in pediatric chronic health conditions. In addition to teaching research methods in urban planning at Texas A&M's College of Architecture, Dr. Varni also serves as a professor and vice chair for research in the pediatrics department of The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center - College of Medicine.

The study, "Reducing Barriers to Care for Vulnerable Children with Asthma," is funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Texas Monthly names Fisk, Vittori
among those shaping the future

Pliny Fisk III, associate professor in Texas A&M’s College of Architecture, has been named to Texas Monthly’s list of “35 People Who Will Shape Our Future” in its February 2008 issue.

Fisk and his wife, Gail Vittori, were on the list along with A&M faculty members Bruce McCarl and Mark Westhusin. Texas Monthly compiled the list as part of the magazine’s look at the future commemorating its 35th anniversary.

Students in graduate and undergraduate studios were recognized by the Houston-Galveston Area Council for their Timber Lane Utility District Master Park Plan.

H-GAC to honor landscape students'
park master plan as 'Best of the Best'

An effort that encompassed three years, three studios and countless student field trips to a floodplain near Spring, Texas has resulted in recognition for the Texas A&M landscape architecture program and a new recreation spot for the area’s residents.

The Timber Lane Utility District Master Park Plan, a 160-acre design project undertaken by Texas A&M graduate and undergraduate landscape architecture students in professor Jon Rodiek’s studios, will be recognized this Tuesday, Feb. 19 by at the Houston-Galveston Area, with a “2007 Parks and Natural Areas Best of the Best Award.” The honor for outstanding contributions to the region will be presented at the H-GAC Board of Directors meeting, at 10 a.m. in H-GAC Conference Room A, at 3555 Timmons Lane in Houston, Texas.

Students to host Walker, other prominent
landscape architects at Aggie Workshop

Peter Walker, FASLA, whose nearly five-decade career has seen him become one of the world’s most prominent landscape architects, will be the keynote speaker at the 37th annual Aggie Workshop Feb. 22-23.

“Workshop 2008: Perseverance,” hosted by Texas A&M University’s student chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, offers students a chance to hear from nationally acclaimed landscape architects and get a taste of what it’s “really like” once they begin working in the field.

The event, which will take place at the A&M College of Architecture’s Langford Architecture Center, is intended to explore what landscape architects have accomplished while revealing innovative opportunities and available career paths.

Architecture student proposes
gigantic use for tiny platelets

A stream of sparkling colors changed hues as it shimmered down a rocky pathway accompanied by the oohs and aahs of Texas A&M College of Architecture students and faculty gathered around the temporary oasis. The faux babbling brook was created by second-year environmental design student Kristin Curtiss, as part of an independent study with visiting assistant professor of architecture Jill Mulholland.

Curtiss’ idea for the project arose from studying contemporary materials, including Helicone HC, microscopic platelets reflecting colors that change with the angle of view. The material, she thought, could have architectural applications.

Hamilton co-edits new journal focusing
on health environments research, design

D. Kirk Hamilton, FAIA, FACHA, has been named co-editor of the new Health Environments Research & Design Journal. Hamilton is a fellow and associate director of the Texas A&M College of Architecture’s Center for Health Systems & Design and an associate professor in the Department of Architecture.

The journal’s first issue was unveiled Nov. 2, 2007, at the Healthcare Design.07 conference in Dallas. Hamilton is co-editing the journal with Jaynelle F. Stichler, an associate professor of nursing at San Diego State University.

launches Facebook page

The College of Architecture has launched a “page” on Facebook, the popular Web network, known as a “social utility” that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them.

People, especially students, use Facebook to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people and institutions they encounter.

To access the college’s new Facebook page, one must create their own personal Facebook website. Once the page is created, Facebook users can visit the college page and sign up as a “fan,” becoming eligible to receive news and updates on special events at the college.

Individual Facebook users can control access to their personal site and information posted there by adjusting privacy settings.

Construction science job fair
attracts plenty of firms, students

The Department of Construction Science hosted the semester’s first Construction Industry Advisory Council career fair Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at the Brazos County Exposition Center. The fair drew 85 firms to the center to discuss possible careers with construction science students. Session II of the fair took place Feb. 11 at the expo center.

AIA Career fair

The American Institute of Architecture Students hosted the largest-ever Texas A&M College of Architecture career fair Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 in the Langford A atrium gallery and Langford B exhibit hall. Coordinator Amy Kircher said there were 140 representatives from 55 firms at the event, up from the 36 firms that were at last year’s event.
