Gift
to transform gallery, support
College of Architecture exhibits
James
and Mary Wright of Dallas will help provide the Texas A&M College of Architecture with a first class visual arts
exhibition space with a gift of $100,000. The donation will be used to
fund renovations to the college’s existing gallery in the Langford
Architecture Center and to support exhibitions by students, faculty and
visiting artists. Upon approval of the Regents of Texas A&M University,
the enhanced venue will be named the Wright Gallery in recognition of
the donors.
With classes in many
of the traditional studio disciplines, as well as one of the nation’s
leading programs in computer animation, the College of Architecture
has long been the home of visual arts education
on the College Station campus. The renovated gallery promises to be an
important element in the future development of those areas.
“The Wright Gallery will be a tribute to the visual arts tradition
of the College of Architecture and a cornerstone for the emerging Department
of Visualization,” noted J. Thomas Regan, dean of the College of
Architecture.
Wright is retired
senior partner of PageSoutherlandPage, an international architecture
firm with offices in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Washington,
D.C. and London. He is also a the Texas A&M Class of 1954, with a
degree in architectural design. He currently serves on the Dean’s
Advisory Committee of the Texas A&M College of Architecture.
Woodcock, committee offer solution
for beleaguered state park system
David G.
Woodcock, architecture professor and director of the Center for Heritage
Conservation
at Texas A&M University’s College
of Architecture, was one of 17 people from across the state appointed
by Joseph Fitzsimons, chair of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission,
to advise on ways to meet the beleaguered state park system shortcomings
in repair, staffing, maintenance, and growth.
On Aug 24, the committee submitted their recommendations, calling for
the entire amount of state sporting goods sales tax to be allocated for
the parks. The move, if adopted by legislators, would increase park funding
by $85 million per year.
For details on the committee recommendations, visit the Texas Parks
and Wildlife website at
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/newsmedia/
releases/?req=20060824a
Woodcock
had earlier been appointed by Fitzsimons to the Texas Parks and Wildlife
Historic
Sites Advisory Committee. His input to the larger
committee, he said, “focused on the unique needs and contributions
of the state parks whose significance reflects the history and heritage
of Texas.”
Cambodian
Land Mine Museum
construction to begin this month
The
Cambodian Land Mine Museum Relief Fund (CLMMRF) recently received a
$150,000 donation to cover construction costs for a new museum facility
in Siem Reap, Cambodia, which was designed by Texas A&M architecture
students in Julie Rogers’ design studio.
Richard
Fitoussi, CLMMRF CEO and director, said construction on the museum
is slated to begin later this month, with current plans targeting an
opening in early 2007.
The $150,000
gift was presented to CLMMRF by Tom Shadyac, the Hollywood film producer
and director, whose bottled water company, H to O (Hope to Others) < http://www.htoo.com >,
supports charities around the world. Shadyac’s new film, “Accepted,” is
currently playing in theatres across North America and “Evan
Almighty,” the sequel to “Bruce Almighty,” is coming
soon.
The CLMMRF
is still collecting funds to equip the new facility. To learn more

Visiting artist Piscitelli to lecture;
‘Ranch’ performance in the works
Paolo Piscitelli,
a fall 2006 visiting artist at the Texas A&M College
of Architecture, will talk about his artwork and discuss plans for his
upcoming public performance in a public lecture slated for 5 p.m. Sept.
13. in the Preston Geren Auditorium in Langford Building B on the Texas
A&M campus.
Piscitelli will discuss “nonobjective sculpture,” an
art form that involves senses other than sight in the experience of
space
and form.
Piscitelli is in the process of planning a three-day performance at
the College of Architecture’s Built Environment Teaching and
Research Facility, or “Architecture Ranch.” Entitled “Platonics
5,” the performance involves the creation of several sculptural
shapes that build over time. Plans call for installing a webcam at
the site to allow College of Architecture students to view his progress
from the Langford Architecture Center.

Administrative
Notes
Registration
under way for ‘official’
Texas A&M student organizations
Student
organizations seeking official recognition by Texas A&M
University must complete an annual recognition process administered
by the Department of Student Activities.
This process applies to student organizations who meet one of the
following three conditions: one year has lapsed since the student
organization was last recognized; the student organization selected
officers in the Spring 2006 semester and has not yet initiated the
recognition process; the student organization plans to select officers
in the Fall 2006 semester prior to September 29, 2006.
To be recognized for 2006-07, a student organization must initiate
the recognition process by attending a pre-recognition seminar no
later than September 29, 2006. To register online for the seminar,
visit:
http://studentactivities.tamu.edu/stuactweb/
sldrsubpages/recognitionm.htm and click on the topic heading "Seminars" in
the banner.
Additional information on the student organization recognition process
can be obtained by contacting Stacy Flores via email at sflores@stuact.tamu.edu or by calling 862-4565.

ACTION ITEM!
Faculty
research symposium
submissions due by Sept. 18
September
18 is the deadline for submitting materials for the College of
Architecture’s Oct. 30 faculty research symposium, “Research
on the Built and Virtual Environments: Global Symposia Presentations
2006.”
Three items are requested from each participating faculty member. Presentation abstracts,
print-quality graphics illustrating the topic, and a list of each faculty member's
invited presentations and published papers since June 1, 2005 should
be submitted to Kathy Waskom at k-waskom@tamu.edu.
A list
of presentations and published papers should be submitted by all faculty members, even those who are not presenting at the Oct.
30 event. Also, faculty new to the college are encouraged to participate.
Submissions
may also be placed in the “Global Symposium 2006” folder
located on the CARC-SHARED (or “S”) drive on the college’s
server. This is especially useful for large graphic files. Those
uploading their submissions to the server should follow-up with
an e-mail notifying Kathy that the submissions have been submitted.
The
abstracts, artwork and list of current research are used to create
a publication that serves as a the symposium program and, more
importantly, is utilized throughout the year to showcase faculty
research initiatives.
The
daylong research symposium is slated for October 30.
