Rodiek's outdoor space paper
earns top NIC research award

Susan RodiekA paper by Susan Rodiek, examining the benefits of outdoor space to residents of long-term care facilities, recently earned the First Place Research Award from the National Investment Center for the Seniors Housing and Care Industries (NIC). The organization, dedicated to advancing the seniors housing and care industry, facilitates informed investment decision-making and provides excellence in networking, professional education, and research.

It’s members, Rodiek noted, include “top-ranking people who own and finance virtually all the long-term care facilities built in the United States.”

Rodiek’s paper, “A Missing Link: Can Enhanced Outdoor Space Improve Seniors Housing?” appeared in Seniors Housing and Care Journal, an annual peer-reviewed publication published by Mather LifeWays, a non-profit organization dedicated to research in long-term care. The journal features the year’s best research in the field of long-term care field, which is relevant to industry investors and long-term care facility owners and developers.

“From what I’ve seen in previous issues, they seem to want valid and leading-edge research that will inform their more research-oriented members on what is being done in the field,” Rodiek explained. “Some articles are purely scientific, but mine was also oriented toward how they might use the results of my studies to develop better facilities for seniors.”

The award, which is the only research award presented each year by the NIC, will be bestowed at the Sept. 27-29 NIC conference in Chicago.

University Writing Center offers
specialized classroom workshops

Writing services available. This fall, the University Writing Center is offering 10-minute classroom presentations for students about University Writing Center services. A longer presentation, available for writing-intensive ("W") courses, examines the writing process, grammar and punctuation, avoiding plagiarism, and citing and documenting sources.

A complete list of all UWC workshops and request form is available online.

Because of high demand for these workshops, the UWC asks instructors not request more than two workshops per course per month. W course instructors who need a workshop topic not covered by the standard offerings may contact the UWC about creation of a special workshop.

Faculty research symposium
submissions due by Sept. 18

Research symposium graphicSeptember 18 is the deadline for submitting materials for the College of Architecture’s Oct. 30 faculty research symposium, “Research on the Built and Virtual Environments: Global Symposia Presentations 2006.”

Abstracts, supporting print-quality graphics and a list of each faculty member's invited presentations and published papers since June 1, 2005 should be submitted to Kathy Waskom at k-waskom@tamu.edu.

A list of presentations and published papers should be submitted by all faculty members, even those who are not presenting at the Oct. 30 event. Also, faculty new to the college are encouraged to participate.

Submissions may also be placed in the “Global Symposium 2006” folder located on the CARC-SHARED (or “S”) drive on the college’s server. This is especially useful for large graphic files. Those uploading their submissions to the server should follow-up with an e-mail notifying Kathy that the submissions have been submitted.

The abstracts, artwork and list of current research are used to create a publication that serves as a the symposium program and, more importantly, is utilized throughout the year to showcase faculty research initiatives.

The daylong research symposium is slated for October 30.
