Tabb leads design exploration
of Serenbe Wellness Hamlet

Phillip Tabb, professor in the Department of Architecture, spent five weeks this summer at Serenbe community near Atlanta, Ga. where he is the master planner.

The first phase of the project was featured in the June 2006 issue of Metropolis Magazine.

This summer, with funding form the Serenbe Institute, Tabb focused on Phase III of the project. He facilitated a charrette with health practitioners, health administrators, and healers from various traditions to develop a design for a Health and Wellness Hamlet. The hamlet will create a residential community in harmony with nature, within the context of Serenbe communities. Its inherent design combines eastern and western healing practices that encourage healthy living and support the commercial development of health and wellness services that will be fully integrated and woven into the very fabric of the hamlet.

Among the facilities planned for the hamlet are an integrated medicine and wellness spa, fitness center, therapeutic pool, vegetarian restaurant, inn with recuperative cabins, pediatric center, an east/west pharmacy, physician’s offices and treatment facilities, and healing herb glasshouses and gardens. This unique residential community will begin construction in 2008.

Prof comments on lifecycle planning
in Corpus Christi newspaper article

In a recent article in the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, Michael Neuman, associate professor of urban planning at Texas A&M University’s College of Architecture, offered insight into the city of Corpus Christi’s adoption of lifecycle planning for infrastructure and maintenance.

"It's typical that a municipality or county hasn't taken a holistic view of infrastructure and maintenance over the long term," Neuman said in the Aug. 13 article. "It seems like it's so common sense. It sounds obvious, but it's not that common, surprisingly."

Neuman, who studied lifecycle planning for the states of California and New Jersey, said few studies have been done, but the results are promising.
"There's no disputing the few studies that have been done that show if you take a life-cycle approach, you'll have significant cost savings," Neuman said.

Faculty research symposium
submissions due by Sept. 18

Research symposium graphicSeptember 18 is the deadline for submitting materials for the College of Architecture’s Oct. 30 faculty research symposium, “Research on the Built and Virtual Environments: Global Symposia Presentations 2006.”

Abstracts, supporting print-quality graphics and a list of each faculty member's invited presentations and published papers since June 1, 2005 should be submitted to Kathy Waskom at k-waskom@tamu.edu.

A list of presentations and published papers should be submitted by all faculty members, even those who are not presenting at the Oct. 30 event. Also, faculty new to the college are encouraged to participate.

Submissions may also be placed in the “Global Symposium 2006” folder located on the CARC-SHARED (or “S”) drive on the college’s server. This is especially useful for large graphic files. Those uploading their submissions to the server should follow-up with an e-mail notifying Kathy that the submissions have been submitted.

The abstracts, artwork and list of current research are used to create a publication that serves as a the symposium program and, more importantly, is utilized throughout the year to showcase faculty research initiatives.

The daylong research symposium is slated for October 30.

Faculty, staff urged to utilize
kiosk displays in Langford A

This summer, the two televisions mounted on the first and second floor of the Langford A atrium have not seen much activity. Faculty and staff with information to communicate to the College of Architecture community are urged to take advantage of this very effective communication tool.

The two TVs display a PowerPoint program that is maintained by college Web administrator Craig Wellington. Automated PowerPoint slides promoting college events or news pertinent to the college community may be submitted directly to Wellington for display on the kiosk at cmwellington@tamu.edu.

Anyone requiring help with animating a prepared slide, may send it to Phillip Rollfing a prollfing@archone.tamu.edu.

“To be effective,” Rollfing said, “Kiosk messages should be kept terse and to the point, and should include an attractive, attention grabbing graphical element. Also, slide creators should avoid crowding too much information on one slide, use only standard typefaces, and not size text any smaller than 24 points.
