College explores recruitment
options in Rio Grande Valley

Oscar Muñoz, deputy director for the Center for Housing and Urban Development at Texas A&M’s College of Architecture and Mark Clayton, interim head of the college’s Department of Architecture, made a recruitment trip to the Rio Grande Valley this week, meeting with representatives from Laredo and Eagle Pass school districts, which together encompass 53 schools.

In addition to discussing ways for encouraging district students to consider applying to College of Architecture, they also examined opportunities for distance education, student visits to the Texas A&M campus and sending guest lecturers to speak at area schools.

Muñoz and Clayton also met with Ray Keck, president of Texas A&M International University, to discuss recruitment possibilities for both undergraduate and graduate students, and the possibility of initiating a “2+2” program allowing students to begin at A&M International then transfer to Texas A&M after their second year.

Haberl named ASHRAE fellow

Jeff Haberl, professor of architecture at Texas A&M University and associate director of Texas A&M's Energy Systems Laboratory, was recently elevated to fellow of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The award will be presented at ASHRAE’s winter meeting, Jan. 27, 2007 in Dallas, Texas.

ASHRAE is an international organization whose sole objective is to advance the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world. ASHRAE’s areas of expertise include energy efficiency, indoor air quality, codes and standards, and guidance for a safe environment during extraordinary incidents.

Haberl, who earned his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado-Boulder in 1986, has been conducting research for almost 30 years in areas related to energy system efficiency, renewable energy and intelligent measurement systems. With the Energy Systems Laboratory, Haberl is currently developing analysis procedures for Texas Senate Bill 5, legislation enacted to reduce ozone pollution in metropolitan areas. The ESL has been the primary contractor for the Texas LoanSTAR program since 1990. The program has saved the taxpayers in Texas over $109.2 million in state revenue in the form of reduced energy use in state facilities.

LAUP profs land $113,000 research
deal with National Park Service

Five Texas A&M professors are developing an early warning system to detect land use changes outside of national park boundaries along the U.S. Gulf Coast as part of a $113,000 cooperative agreement with the National Park Service.

Chris Ellis, Sam Brody, Forster Ndubisi, Walt Peacock and Doug Wunneberger, all from the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning, will be involved in the project. They are developing a system to compile publicly available information about changes in land use. In turn, the data will be provided to park staff in an updatable format that is geographically linked and easy to use. This will be accomplished by continually mapping permits pertaining to properties adjacent to the park for park managers.

The intent is to give park managers the information needed to plan accordingly for upcoming changes in land use near the park.

According to the research proposal, one of the highest priority management concerns for parks in this region is changing land use outside of the parks’ boundaries and the potential impacts of those changes on the parks’ natural resources. Increased development around the parks can contribute to the increased presence of non-native invasive species, contribute to fragmentation of habitats, alter water and air quality, impact viewscapes and soundscapes, increase litter and debris within the park, and increase visitor impacts. Although it is possible to track historical changes in land use though remote sensing, such an approach does not provide an early warning for park managers to be able to react to those changes before, or as they are occurring.

Wei Yan earns 'Best Paper' honor
at design, computing conference

Wei Yan, an assistant professor in the the Texas A&M Department of Architecture's Visualization Science program, recently earned "Best Paper" honors at the Second International Conference on Design Computing and Cognition held at the Technical University of Eindhoven in The Netherlands, July 10-12, 2006.

Nathaniel "Key" KolbNathaniel Key Kolb, Jr., ’57 (ARCH), a 2003 College of Architecture Outstanding Alumnus, passed away June 27, 2006 in Dallas with his family at his bedside. He was 72 years old.

A fellow of the American Institute of Architects, Kolb spent the majority of his professional career with Omniplan, a Dallas-based architecture firm that designs retail, office, and university buildings nationwide.

Some of the major projects to which Kolb contributed during his career at Omniplan are the 1984 addition to the Dallas Convention Center, Republic Bank Tower and NorthPark Shopping Center. He also served as principal architect for two facilities on the north campus of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. His work with Southwestern extended more than 7 years and resulted in the successful completion of over $250 million of research laboratories. Other projects he directed included the Texas Headquarters of Fujitsu America in Dallas and the School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Kolb was instrumental in making Omniplan an internationally recognized firm. The company, which Kolb served as president and chief executive officer, earned the Texas Society of Architects Outstanding Firm Award in 2000. He was also deeply involved in multiple Dallas civic organizations, with a special interest in urban design, historic preservation, the environment and the performing arts.

This work is supported by her graduate committee, which includes chair Anat Geva, David Woodcock, Gregor Kalas, Louis Tassinary from the Department of Architecture and Gregory Pappas from the Department of Philosophy.

Administrative Notes

New photos, directory changes due Friday!

Get your picture taken today! The College of Architecture is printing a brand new Faculty-Staff Directory for the 2006-07 academic year.

Those who have not done so already need to submit their updated personal data including contact information, office location, and for faculty, areas of scholarly interest and a list of degrees earned.

For a new photograph, please make an appointment with John Peters, the college's audio-visual specialist, at 845-7887 or jpeters@archone.tamu.edu.

NOTE: There are quite a few long-time faculty and staff who are way overdue for a new portrait. Many of the photographs in the current directory were pulled off of the Web at a resolution that is not fit for print reproduction. So in other words, just because your picture was in the last directory doesn't mean you don't need to have a new one taken.

Department administrators are urged to contact faculty who will be joining the college this fall to solicit pictures and biographical data for the directory.
