Brazos Valley African-American
museum features Schiffhauer’s
Charles Gordone portrait series

An exhibit featuring portraits of the late Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Charles Gordone, painted by Texas A&M architecture professor Robert Schiffhauer, will highlight the Saturday, July 22 grand opening of the Brazos Valley African-American Museum in Bryan, Texas.

The paintings and drawings, in media ranging from brilliant acrylic to muted charcoal, explored the life of a man Schiffhauer had known only from photographs, newspaper clippings and through a friendship with his widow, Susan Kouyomijian Gordone.

A story and slide show examining Schiffhauer’s work on the Charles Gordone portrait series, “Legacy of a Seer,” was featured in the spring 2005 issue of the College of Architecture’s archone. newsletter:

The Brazos Valley African American Museum officially opens 11:30 a.m. Saturday in its new facility, located at 400 East 20th St. in Bryan. Admission will be free Saturday. Afterward, entry will cost $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and $2 for students. Children 5 and under are admitted free.

Campus planner eyes contemporary
urban architecture in July 25 lecture

Michael Dennis, an architecture professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who consulted on Texas A&M's campus master plan, will present a lecture, “Between Bombs and Blobs: The Search for a Contemporary Urban Architecture,” 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 25 in the Preston Geren Auditorium in Building B of the Langford Architecture Center.

“During the last 50 years architecture has become ever more involved with its own navel – more private, more idiosyncratic – to the exclusion of civic considerations," said Dennis, expanding on his lecture topic. "If sustainable communities are to again be achieved in the 21st century, architecture must re-find its civic dimension.”

Dennis, some may recall, was the keynote speaker at the Center for Heritage Conservation’s 2003 Historic Preservation Symposium at Washington-on-the-Brazos state historic site. He has been involved in a number of planning projects where culture and place are almost synonymous, like Thomas Jefferson’s University of Virginia campus.

Former student elected to
RTKL Board of Directors

RTKL Vice President David Thompson, AIA, was elected to the international design firm’s board of directors.

A 33-year veteran of complex, security-driven projects for RTKL, Thompson earned a BED in 1972 and an M.Arch in 1974 from the Texas A&M College of Architecture.

Thompson’s appointment to the board was announced by RTKL Chairman Paul Jacob, AIA, at the firm ’s annual shareholder meeting in Los Angeles.

Faculty research symposium
submissions due by Sept. 18

Research symposium graphicSeptember 18 is the deadline for submitting materials for the College of Architecture’s Oct. 30 faculty research symposium, “Research on the Built and Virtual Environments: Global Symposia Presentations 2006.”

Abstracts, supporting print-quality graphics and a list of each faculty member's invited presentations and published papers since June 1, 2005 should be submitted to Kathy Waskom at k-waskom@tamu.edu.

A list of presentations and published papers should be submitted by all faculty members, even those who are not presenting at the Oct. 30 event. Also, faculty new to the college are encouraged to participate.

Submissions may also be placed in the “Global Symposium 2006” folder located on the CARC-SHARED (or “S”) drive on the college’s server. This is especially useful for large graphic files. Those uploading their submissions to the server should follow-up with an e-mail notifying Kathy that the submissions have been submitted.

The abstracts, artwork and list of current research are used to create a publication that serves as a the symposium program and, more importantly, is utilized throughout the year to showcase faculty research initiatives.

The daylong research symposium is slated for October 30.
