College hosts fall artist in residence
Internationally exhibited artist Paolo Piscitelli, of Turin,
Italy, will join the College of Architecture for the fall 2006 semester
as an artist
in residence. Though the details of his semester-long visit are still
being worked out, don’t wait to check out his remarkable work at:

Acclaimed artist to lecture Nov. 29
Also, at 4 p.m. November 29, internationally acclaimed artist Ann Hamilton
will lecture in the Preston Geren Auditorium. Hamilton studied textile design
at the University of Kansas, and later received an MFA from Yale University.
Though her degree is in sculpture, textiles and fabric have continued to
be an important part of her work, which includes installations, photographs,
videos, performances, and objects.
Samples of Hamilton’s work can be viewed online at:
http://www-viz.tamu.edu/faculty/lurleen/
air/ah/ah_index.html
Hamilton was featured in the PBS series, “Art in the 21st Century.” Segments
of that show can be viewed online at
http://www.pbs.org/art21/artists/hamilton/index.html
Both Piscitelli’s and Hamilton’s visits are
sponsored by the Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts and the College
of Architecture.
Former student, preservationist
accepts a faculty post in UAE
Paul Neidinger ’86
(BED) ’89
(MARCH), an historical architect with the National Park Service in
Santa Fe, N.M. and fellow
in the Center
for Heritage Conservation, has been awarded a teaching fellowship as
visiting professor at American University of Sharjah in the United
Arab Emirates.
A one-year leave from the National Park Service will allow Neidinger to
teach a foundations class and possibly a course in historic preservation
beginning this fall.
“This should be a good experience,” Neidinger wrote in an e-mail
message to David Woodcock, “a good break from dusty building restoration.
There is good fishing and good diving there, and crazy Dubai just down
the road.”
Neidinger’s NPS project, restoring a hot shot furnace at Fort Jefferson
in the Dry Tortugas National Park, was featured in the Summer 2004 online
edition of the archone. newsletter:

Ulrich featured in July issue of
Environmental Building News
Texas A&M architecture professor Roger Ulrich is heavily referenced
throughout the article, “Biophilia in Practice: Buildings that Connect
People with Nature,” which appears in the July 2006 issue of Environmental
Building News.
The article
takes a look at “the missing link in sustainable design,” biophilia — literally
a love for nature — and how this concept can inform building practices.

Staff job
descriptions to be
posted online, updates sought
Human Resources has implemented a new system to put all staff position
descriptions online. Lisa McKown is currently working with HR to launch
the program in the College or Architecture. However, she first needs
college staff to updates to their job descriptions.
To that end, she is sending staff members a paper copy of their current
job description. She urges everyone to review their description and e-mail
changes to her in a Word document at lmckown@archmail.tamu.edu Anyone
with questions about this initiative should contact McKown at 845-1276.
Faculty, staff urged to utilize
kiosk displays in Langford A
This summer, the two televisions mounted on the first and second floor
of the Langford A atrium have not seen much activity. Faculty and staff
with information to communicate to the College of Architecture community
are urged to take advantage of this very effective communication tool.
The two TVs display a PowerPoint program that is maintained by college
Web administrator Craig Wellington. Automated PowerPoint slides promoting
college events or news pertinent to the college community may be submitted
directly to Wellington for display on the kiosk at cmwellington@tamu.edu.
Anyone requiring help with animating a prepared slide, may send it to
Phillip Rollfing a prollfing@archone.tamu.edu.
“To be effective,” Rollfing said, “Kiosk
messages should be kept terse and to the point, and should include
an attractive,
attention grabbing graphical element. Also, slide creators should avoid
crowding too much information on one slide, use only standard typefaces,
and not size text any smaller than 24 points.”
It's
time to update your data,
photograph for staff directory
Toward
the end of July, the College of Architecture will print a brand new
Faculty-Staff Directory for the 2006-07 academic year.
Those who
have not done so already need to submit their updated personal data
including contact information, office location, and for faculty, areas
of scholarly interest and a list of degrees earned.
For a new
photograph, please make an appointment with John Peters, the college's
audio-visual specialist, at 845-7887 or jpeters@archone.tamu.edu.
There are
quite a few long-time faculty and staff who are way overdue for a new
portrait. Many of the photographs in the current directory were pulled
off of the Web at a resolution that is not fit for print reproduction.
So in other words, just because your picture was in the last directory
doesn't mean you don't need to have a new one taken.
Department
administrators are urged to contact faculty who will be joining the
college this fall to solicit pictures and biographical data for the
directory.
