to showcase faculty research

earth graphicThe Texas A&M College of Architecture’s eighth annual faculty research symposium, “Research on the Built and Virtual Environments: Global Symposia Presentations 2006,” begins 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 30 at the Langford Architecture Center on the Texas A&M campus.

The daylong research showcase features a series of faculty presentations previously delivered at scholarly venues around the world. This year's symposium includes invited or refereed presentations and papers from the 2005-06 academic year.

“The individual sessions comprising the symposium reflect all aspects of the designed environment,” said Lou Tassinary, associate dean for research at the College of Architecture. “The categories were not predetermined, but rather reflect themes that have emerged in the work of faculty over the past year.”

College to screen PBS sustainable
design series featuring Ken Yeang

College of Architecture students will have a few opportunities to get acquainted with world renown “green” architect Ken Yeang, before he delivers the first Frederick E. Giesecke Lecture on Monday, Oct. 30. Brad Pitt, too!

On Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 4 p.m., the College of Architecture will screen two segments of the acclaimed six-part PBS series on sustainable design — “design e2” — one of which features Ken Yeang’s eco-friendly National Library Board high-rise in Singapore. The DVD, narrated by Brad Pitt, will be shown on the big screen in the Preston Geren Auditorium.

Also, on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 2-3, a plasma screen will be set up on the second floor of the Langford A Atrium and the show will run repeatedly.

“design e2 (the economies of being environmentally conscious)” explores the vitality of the environment through eco-friendly architecture. Masterfully shot in high-definition, the series introduces viewers to the inventive leaders and technologies driving sustainable practices worldwide in the design of buildings where we live, work, and play.

The first episode, "The Green Apple," demonstrates how the ubiquitous skyscraper can surprisingly be a model of environmental responsibility. The final episode, “Deeper Shades of Green,” presents some of the most remarkable visionaries who are changing the face of architecture and environmentalism: Ken Yeang (the Giesecke Lecturer), Werner Sobek and William McDonough.

Also, streaming video is available on the “design e2” Web site in a variety of formats, including video podcasts. The Web site can be accessed at http://www.design-e2.com/.

HKS Inc. officers endow architecture-for-health
chair, professorships

Three current HKS leaders, themselves graduates of the Texas A&M architecture program, share the late Harwood Smith’s commitment to advancing architectural education at their alma mater. These HKS officials, Ron Skaggs ’65, Joseph Sprague ’70, and Craig Beale ’71, have demonstrated their personal commitment to Texas A&M architecture by endowing three faculty positions focusing on healthcare architecture.

The positions — one chair and two professorships, now all fully funded — received faculty appointments in October 2006 from J. Thomas Regan, dean of the College of Architecture:

George J. Mann, professor of architecture, was appointed as the Ronald L. Skaggs, FAIA and Joseph G. Sprague, FAIA Endowed Chair in Health Facilities Design;

Roger Ulrich, professor of architecture, is holder of the Julie and Craig Beale ’71 Endowed Professorship in Health Facilities Design; and

Susan Rodiek, professor of architecture and associate director of Texas A&M’s Center for Health Systems & Design, is holder of the Ronald L. Skaggs Endowed Professorship in Health Facilities Design, a position originally held by Mann.
